SPONSOR A STUDENT

Many students have lost one or both parents and are considered partial or complete orphans. Children who have lost both parents are taken in and cared for by relatives or other families in the community. If a family cannot afford to pay the school fees, it is impossible for a child to attend secondary school.

Because of extreme poverty in this part of Kenya many children do not have the opportunity to attend secondary school.

In Kenya, students spend 8 years at primary school and 4 years at secondary school. To secure a place at secondary school, Grade 8 students must sit and pass examinations for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE).

Once the results of the KCPE are known, the Agolomuok Students Support Group selects bright needy students to continue their secondary education. The students are considered to have both the academic ability and the personal qualities needed to succeed at secondary school. A Mentor is appointed for each student to provide support and encouragement and to monitor their progress.

For a commitment of $49 per month OR $588 per year, you can change the life of a Kenya Kid.

SPONSORSHIP- HOW IT WORKS

Sponsors support a student for 4 years of secondary school.

A sponsor will receive a photo of the student and a profile.

Sponsorship of  $49 per month or $588 per year covers the cost of day school fees and textbooks.

Students write to their sponsors at the end of each term enclosing copies of their examination results.

A visit to meet your sponsored student can be arranged.

SPONSORSHIP CASE STUDY

Sarah lives with her mother and two younger brothers and is one of five siblings. Her father, a fisherman, abandoned the family when she was 15 years old. The loss of her father’s income meant Sarah had to leave school before she completed Form 3.

Sarah thought her future looked bleak and would amount to nothing more than scavenging firewood with her mother. Together they burnt the wood to make charcoal to sell at the local market so the family could survive.

Imagine Sarah’s delight when she was selected by the Agolomuok Students Support Group to be sponsored to continue her education. Sarah was chosen as someone having both the academic ability and the personal qualities needed to succeed.

A sponsor was allocated to support Sarah and encouraged to write to her. As this new friendship developed with the exchange of letters, Sarah has been greatly encouraged. She is amazed that a person from the other side of the world would take a personal interest in her.

After successfully completing Form 4 and with the continuing support of her sponsor, Sarah has begun University studies to follow her dream and become a secondary school teacher.
